Climb Mt Rinjani in Lombok, the massive volcano that gives the Gilis amazing sunrises.

The International Rinjani Mountain Climbing event in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), is scheduled in July 2010, with more foreign mountain climbers taking part.

"I have several times coordinated preparations of the international event in Jakarta, and this time its schedule has been set in July 2010," Head of the NTB Cultural and Tourism Agency Lalu Gita Ariadi said here Tuesday.

Ariadi said the organizers of the international event was set up by the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Natural Conservation (PHKA), of the Forestry Ministry.

Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia after Mt Kerinci (3,800 meters) in Sumatra, and has become very popular to local and foreign tourists visiting Lombok and the Gili islands.

The geo-tourism potentials include the beautiful cauldron, lake, peak, waterfalls, hot springs, caves, erruption history, blast-hole and new lava flow, and has therefore been suggested to become the first geopark in Indonesia.

The 3,726 meters high volcano had been suggested to be developed into Indonesia`s first geopark, or one of the 54 geoparks in 17 countries of the world.

Since placed under the management of RTMB, Rinjani had been several time been given national and international awards like the World Agency Award 2004 and the Tourism For Tomorrow Awards in 2006 and 2008.

The Rinjani Mountain Climbing will be started in mid-April to early in December, depending on weather conditions.

The route of the climb will reach Lake Segara Anak, by two routes namely the Senaru climb in 7-10 hours on foot covering eight kilometers, and Sembalun route in 8-10 hours.

Visitors who are already at Pelawangan would still need 4-5 hours to reach the peak of Rinjani through the climbing routes in forests.

More information about Rinjani, Lombok [click here]

Visit Lombok & Sumbawa 2012

Ever since the first launch of Visit Indonesian Year program in 1992 (VIY 1992), The Indonesian Culture and Tourism Department continuously sustain similar program every year to attract foreign tourists and encourage to come to many different beautiful regions of Indonesia. Many tourist destinations conduct series of events to expose their tourist attractions every year with improving preparations from time to time.

The Launch of Visit Lombok – Sumbawa 2012

West Nusa Tenggara Province as one of Indonesian provinces that has various tourist potentials and indigenous natural resources is prepared and focused as the core program in 2012. Officially the plan of this program is launched on Saturday, 5 July 2009 in a ceremonial event held at Senggigi, Lombok. This event is attended by the President of Republic of Indonesia, His Honorable, Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The launch of Visit Lombok-Sumbawa Year 2012 program has also become an event for West Nusa Tenggara province to initiate and perform their preparation in welcoming the special year that is especially programmed for them.

The Minister of Indonesian Culture and Tourism Department, His Excellency Ir. Jero Wacik, SE said, “The branding of Indonesian Tourism is: Kenali Negerimu, Cintai Negerimu (Know Your Country, Love Your Country). It means and also describes the Indonesian natural richness in the frame of tourism industry that covers natural tourism, heritage tourism, cultural tourism, shopping tourism, culinary tourism, and marine tourism. Lombok and Sumbawa island have some potentials i.e. natural tourism resources, pearl breed, and traditional woven. These made very much worthwhile for Lombok and Sumbawa island to be promoted.

In this event, some promotional activities were also launched such as Website and VT. Apart from that, a special session to show the pearl and traditional woven were also displayed as two primary commodities of West Nusa Tenggara Province.

Will Goodman from the UK broke the World Record for staying underwater for a total of 48 hours and 9 minutes and 17 seconds.

Will Goodman aged 33, a TDI Advanced Tri-mix instructor and Buddy Rebreather Instructor with Blue Marlin Dive, Gili Trawangan, Indonesia went into the water at 08.11:33 hrs on the 7th January 2010 emerging at 08:20:16 hrs on the 9th January 2010

Will Goodman has previously made 2 unofficial world records. The first in 2005 when he spent 24 hours under water and a second in 2008 when he spent 33 hours underwater. This new record has been adjudicated and witnessed appropriately and will be registered with Guinness World Records™.

The support team for the dive included Simon Liddiard, owner of Blue Marlin Dive Centre and a team of PADI instructors from Gili Trawangan's dive fraternity.
Witnessing the event included Tony Andrews from PADI.

Will's dive was made using a combination of closed circuit rebreathers and open circuit scuba equipment. During the attempt Will was submerged to a depth exceeding 6m for the first 20 minutes of the record. He had no physical contact with the surface at anytime during his time underwater. His support crew replenished his air supply when necessary.

To enable Will to maintain a constant depth a metal frame was constructed. This provided a base point for Will and a crucial observation point for the support crew.

His previous records and training with the use of specialist equipment gave Will the ability to break the latest challenging record set by Robert Silva in Belize in September 2009 who managed 48 hours and 3 minutes.

Sponsorship from O'Three provided Will with a custom-made 7mm wetsuit, a crucial comfort that he did not have in previous attempts.

For entertainment an underwater housing was used for his iPod and his support crew entertained and supported him throughout and nutrition was provided in liquid form.

The Gili Eco Trust

Next Clean Up Daywill be on the 9th of October: be ready to register and clean Trawangan island with the local kids from the school as well as with the support of SATGAS, Janur Indah, FMPL and many more residsents and businesses who care!

if you are a diver, get a free dive to collect marine debris and record your datas to PADI Project Aware. at the end of the day, we will meet up all together for a nice meal and party in Sama-Sama bar and Bungalows.

The Gili Eco Trust was set up in 2002 to support local efforts from SATGAS (local security) to protect the Gili islands. The seven dive centres of Gili Trawangan reached an agreement with a local organization and began collecting a small fee from each diver. The Eco Trust then established a cutting-edge reef restoration program.

The BioRock projects that lie directly off the beaches on the east of the island are artificial structures that stimulate coral growth with the use of a small electric current. The Gili islands are now home to twenty-one BioRock structures. Ask at your dive center for more information on this pioneering project.
Through the Gili Eco Trust, each diver continues to help to conserve our recovering marine environment; Eco Trust money supports local fishermen to enable them to fish further a field, taking pressure off the immediate area. As you dive or snorkel through the waters around these islands, you will see the evidence of marine populations recovering.

The Gili Eco Trust is currently expanding its programs. New directions include education and awareness initiatives, as well as projects that will help the local community to realise a sustainable future despite the pressure of increased visitor numbers. We are working to ensure that these islands will be able to support their communities while attracting international visitors for years to come. While your financial backing is vital in enabling us to continue our work, your behavior in terms of your impact on the island is even more important. On land please make sure that you use the bins provided for all your rubbish (including your cigarette ends!) and on your dives please be careful of where you are putting your fins and fingers. Remember that marine life is there to be observed and admired, not hassled or collected!

As you enjoy your time here, we ask you to be aware of how delicate this ecosystem is. Help us to ensure that future generations have this same privileged opportunity….

Baruna Villa
We stayed at Baruna Villas on Gili Trawangan for 6 days, and had a wonderful time. It is a perfect place if you travel with children. Our two children at 5 and 7 years loved the pool and the large and cool rooms. It was peaceful, luxerious and clean. The staff was very friendly and gentle. It was located approximately 200 meters away from the beach which made it a quiet place at night away from the main "road", but still just two minutes walk from the nicest beach, snorkeling spots and restaurants. Bikes were included in the rent, which made it easy to explore the island.
Thanks for a great holiday!

FREEDIVEGILI is the new place that you can learn to freedive in South East Asia, located at Manta Dive (www.manta-dive.com) on the idyllic island of Gili Trawangan in Lombok, just a short distance from the holiday island of Bali.

Apnea Total Instructor Mike Board will teach you breathing and relaxation techniques that will make you feel more comfortable holding your breath and allowing you to dive longer and go deeper. Whether you are interested in competitive apnea, spearfishing, or just improving your snorkelling and confidence underwater, FreeDiveGili is the ideal place for you to learn.

FREEDIVING although a relatively young sport is the oldest method of diving. It is the most natural way to experience the underwater world, swimming freely, silently and allowing you to get much closer to marine life without disturbing it.

Gili Trawangan has been one of Indonesia’s premier dive attractions for many years with its crystal clear waters, beautiful coral reefs and abundant marine life. This also makes it the perfect place to learn to freedive with beautiful dive sites only a walk off of the beach.

FREEDIVEGILI teaches the Apnea Total system of freediving education. For more information visit www.apnea-total.com

FREEDIVER COURSE
The Freediver Course is an entry level course designed to teach the fundamental skills of breath holding and freediving. This course is suitable for anyone interested in improving their overall comfort underwater, or for those with previous freediving experience, interested in developing the correct techniques to extend their limits. This two day course is comprised of two theory sessions and four open water dive sessions.

Hey Ady, sorry it's taken so long to send this thank you to you -but THANKS MAN!

We had a fantastic time at Karma Kayak on Gili Trawangan, despite the rain, high seas and power outages -Grace and Astrid and their fantastic staff (Agus, Masrur and the rest of the wonderful team) made us very comfortable, the food was EXCELLENT and the bungalow and accommodations FIRST RATE! Definitely a place we will recommend to everyone.

And also your services -the Blue Safari boat trip was also comfortable and efficient, and if we had left it a few more days, we wouldn't have ben able to make it across the strait, the waves were so high!

It was great to meet you at the dive shop in Kuta, you were very pleasant and helpful, and we really appreciate everything.

Best to you, your staff and your wonderful home of Indonesia!
