Will Goodman from the UK broke the World Record for staying underwater for a total of 48 hours and 9 minutes and 17 seconds.

Will Goodman aged 33, a TDI Advanced Tri-mix instructor and Buddy Rebreather Instructor with Blue Marlin Dive, Gili Trawangan, Indonesia went into the water at 08.11:33 hrs on the 7th January 2010 emerging at 08:20:16 hrs on the 9th January 2010

Will Goodman has previously made 2 unofficial world records. The first in 2005 when he spent 24 hours under water and a second in 2008 when he spent 33 hours underwater. This new record has been adjudicated and witnessed appropriately and will be registered with Guinness World Records™.

The support team for the dive included Simon Liddiard, owner of Blue Marlin Dive Centre and a team of PADI instructors from Gili Trawangan’s dive fraternity.
Witnessing the event included Tony Andrews from PADI.

Will’s dive was made using a combination of closed circuit rebreathers and open circuit scuba equipment. During the attempt Will was submerged to a depth exceeding 6m for the first 20 minutes of the record. He had no physical contact with the surface at anytime during his time underwater. His support crew replenished his air supply when necessary.

To enable Will to maintain a constant depth a metal frame was constructed. This provided a base point for Will and a crucial observation point for the support crew.

His previous records and training with the use of specialist equipment gave Will the ability to break the latest challenging record set by Robert Silva in Belize in September 2009 who managed 48 hours and 3 minutes.

Sponsorship from O’Three provided Will with a custom-made 7mm wetsuit, a crucial comfort that he did not have in previous attempts.

For entertainment an underwater housing was used for his iPod and his support crew entertained and supported him throughout and nutrition was provided in liquid form.

    News Release

Guinness World Records Attempt – April 14 2008 (Longest open salt water SCUBA dive)

Endurance Diver Attempts To Smash Own Record Dive, Gili Trawangan, Lombok, Indonesia

Will Goodman, on record as performing the longest ever open water SCUBA dive is currently in advanced preparation to make another record attempt and rewrite the history books by having the dive verified by Guinness World Records. The Gili Trawangan based dive instructor aims to smash his previous endurance record of 24 hours and three minutes underwater in the open ocean, which he set on 20 July 2005. In his latest dive Will plans to extend his previous endurance dive by as much as 74 hours – to stay at 6 metres under open ocean sea for up to 100 hours.

His 2005 dive was the first open water endurance attempt of its kind. Until this time underwater records similar to this one had only been attempted in more controllable environments such as lakes and artificial tanks, where conditions are more stable and can be monitored with ease.

A central aim of the record attempt is to attract sponsorship funds for the local school on Trawangan. All funds raised are going towards the education of children on the island. It is hoped that there will be sufficient money raised to employ a full time English language teacher as well as provide teaching materials and assorted necessities to ensure that the school is able to provide a better foundation for children from Gili Trawangan.

The record attempt is scheduled for the morning of Monday April 14 2008 and the target is for Will to remain submerged for 100hrs. The dive will be made using a combination of rebreather and open circuit systems with no physical contact with the surface. Support teams for this dive, equipment and surface logistics will be organised once again by Blue Marlin and Trawangan Dive with full support from members of the Gili Eco Trust based on Gili Trawangan.
The event is expected to be covered by international media, dive institutions and via a documentary program sponsored by National Geographic slated for production..
